Problem You have a room full of 2Post Relay Racks, a bunch of servers, and boxes of 4Post Rail Kits. What are you going to do?

Solution Convert your 2Post Racks into 4Post Racks using 2Post Conversion Kits.

Description 2Post Conversion Kits contain a set of 4 large brackets. These brackets provide the corner attachment that 4Post Rail Kits require. The brackets are available in several sizes from 2-7 Rack Unit heights and 3 different depths allowing you to purchase exactly the amount of space that you are going to use. If your server is 4 Rack Units tall, you will need a 4U Conversion Kit, for example. The drawing on the right shows what a 2U box will look like once it has been mounted on rails that have been attached to the 2U Conversion Kit.

The drawings above illustrate how to convert a 2 Post Rack into one that acts like a 4 Post Rack. In the example above, twenty, 2U, 2 Post Conversion Kits have been stacked on top of one another. The brackets have round holes on one end so that one side might be screwed into the threaded holes of the 2 Post Rack. The the other end of the brackets has square holes. Once the brackets have been mounted to the rack, the square holes will face outward in the front and rear of the rack, essentially now transforming it into a 4 Post. Cage nuts and screws are also included if threaded holes are necessary.

The latest generation of servers just keep getting deeper and deeper. This can cause obstruction issues with the Cable Management Arms and the Power Distribution Units at the back of the Server Rack. The following photo shows a Dell PE1950 installed in an APC 2100 NetShelter Server Rack. The CMA is very close to preventing the Power Cord from being plugged into the APC powerstrip.

The following installation shows a large number of PE1950s installed in an APC 3100 NetShelter Server Rack. There are so many cables that the APC powerstrip is buried and cannot be seen. The client was unable to plug the power cords in due to the large number of cables and the PE1950 CMAs that were causing an obstruction.

This photo shows how the installer attempted to resolve the issue by spacing the PE1950s apart. Notice here how the CMA is approximately 1″ from the receptacle. A standard NEMA 5-15P will not physically fit into that space. What is needed is a Low Profile Power Cord.

The Low Profile Power Cords are less than 1″ in height and can be used to resolve installations where the CMA, Cables, or other device is causing an obstruction with the power receptacles. These cords can be custom ordered with numerous different types of NEMA as well as IEC connectors. Custom lengths are also available.

The HP Engineering Staff responsible for the design of HP Rail Kits definitely follows the “Don’t over Engineer it” philosophy. The HP Rail Kits are simple and functional, exactly the way a Rail Kit should be. This is completely opposite from the older style HP Rail Kits that had complicated assemblies and mechanisms with lever arms and springs.

There are two pegs in the mounting flange of most HP Rail Kits. These pegs have a slight taper that allow it to install into a Square Hole Server Rack without the use of any tools. The Rail Kits lock in place with a very simple piece of Spring Steel the prevents the Rail Kits from moving.

If your Server Rack has round non-threaded holes like an IBM Server Rack, the pegs in the mounting flange will fit easily into the hole. If your Server Rack has a threaded hole then the HP Rail Kit is still compatible. The pegs must be removed by unscrewing them and then using screws to install the Rail Kit into the Server Rack. The following video shows how easily this task is accomplished.

The new HP Server Chassis have increased in width to the point that some of the models are no longer able to provide slide rails. The manufacturer’s like HP, Dell, and IBM have shoved about as much electronics as they possible can into the 1U and 2U chassis. This has forced them to make the chassis as long as possible. Apparently HP has found a few more millimeters of space by increasing the chassis width.

This chassis width can prevent the HP servers from being installed in 2Post Relay Racks using the HP Rail Kit. The solution to this issue is using a 3rd Party Rail Kit from RackSolutions. There are several Rail Kits available for the new HP chassis design.
